Planter 101

Considerations in Selecting the Best Planter for a Customer

There are several factors to consider when selecting your Kinze planter. This includes farm size, crops grown, planting strategy, time-saving features, weight distribution, ease of transport, and seed type.

Farm size

Kinze offers a complete line of planters from the front fold Kinze models 5900 and 5700 for larger operations, to the adaptable Kinze model 3005 hitch-pin planter for small farms. For larger farms, bulk fill hoppers are a must for increased productivity.

Planting strategy

Choose a Kinze planter with a bulk fill seed delivery system to save time if you are planting the same seed in the entire field.

Do you need to split plant plots or hybrids? Then a Kinze planter with individual seed hoppers will allow you to control the type of seed row-by-row.

Kinze provides both bulk fill seed handling (models 5900, 5700, 5670, 3665, 3605, & 3505) and individual seed hoppers (models 3605, 3505, 3205, & 3005) to fit your needs.

Time saving features

Regardless of whether you’re planting thousands of acres or a few hundred, maximizing efficiency during the planting window is critical. While smaller operations might have time for multiple passes, larger operations don’t have that luxury. Kinze models 5900, 5700, 5670, 3665, 3605, and 3505 provide added efficiency in the field with up to 750-gallon liquid fertilizer capacity and bulk fill seed-handling systems. Models 5900, 5700, & 5670 are available with plumbing for connecting to saddle tanks or a nurse tank.

Crops grown

Do you primarily plant corn? Then Kinze model 5900 with state-of-the-art technology will deliver unmatched accuracy and productivity with 12-, 16-, or 24-row configurations to fit the size of your operation.

Do you want narrow row spacing? Then consider the Kinze model 5700 which plants 24 or 36 rows, 20″ apart. Are you wanting to plant soybeans or other crops in 15″ rows? Split row planters include Kinze models 5670, 3665, 3605, 3505, and 3005 to fit your needs, and easily allow planting of both 15″ and 30″ rows.

Weight Distribution

Weight distribution is important when selecting a high-productivity planter. That’s why Hydraulic Weight Transfer comes standard on Kinze models 5900, 5700, 5670, and 3665, and optional on 3605, to ensure even weight distribution and avoid yield-reducing pinch rows.

On planters equipped with a bulk fill scale package and Blue Drive electric drive, the hydraulic weight transfer becomes ACTIVE. The weight of the bulk fill hoppers is constantly monitored, and the amount of weight transfer changes based on how much seed is in the hoppers.

On the 5670 model planter, the active weight transfer is adjustable to compensate for the onboard fertilizer or field conditions.

Ease of transport

Getting in and out of the field quickly and ease of transport is critical during the planting window. Kinze offers multiple front, pivot, and wing fold planters that provide narrow transport and short turning radius.

Seed delivery

Kinze planters offer different meter options including True Speed®, True Rate®, Brush Meter 2.0, and Finger Pick-Up Meters, depending on the planter model. You can double the acres you plant in a day with True Speed, a high-speed electric drive meter that controls seed from meter to seed trench. The result is precise singulation and seed spacing at speeds from 3–12 mph with various seed shapes and sizes. The easy-to-maintain design saves time and money, resulting in a lower cost of ownership.

There are many other factors to consider when selecting the best Kinze planter for your farming operation, and your Kinze dealer is ready to help you find the best solution.

Planting row options

Split row

Kinze offers five split row planter models to fit your needs; models 5670, 3665, 3605, 3505, and 3005. A split row planter enables farmers to “split the rows.” You have the capability to plant corn in 30″ rows and then quickly convert to 15″ soybeans by engaging the push-type row units. The split row system also offers several other advantages. Staggering the push-type row units and mounting them on twin frames helps improve trash flow and seed placement accuracy, weight is better distributed across the planter frame, and row units are easier to access for maintenance.

4 Row

Kinze offers one 4-row planter model: 3005

6 Row

Kinze offers one 6-row planter model: 3005

8 Row

Kinze offers two 8-row planter models: 3505 and 3005

12 Row

Kinze offers five 12-row planter models; 5900, 5670 (split rows standard), 3665, 3605, and 3205

16 Row

Kinze offers four 16-row planter models; 5900, 5670 (split rows standard), 3665, and 3605

Kinze offers two front fold planter models: 5900 (24R30, 16R30, & 12R30) and 5700 (36R20, 24R30, & 24R20). The wings of a front fold planter fold forward along the center frame – providing a clean front fold design that folds for transport and has wing flex points for consistent ground contact on rolling terrain.

Pivot fold

Kinze offers four split row pivot fold planter models: 5670 (31R15 & 23R15), 3665 (16R30 & 12R30), 3605 (16R30 & 12R30), and 3505 (8R30). Pivot fold for narrow transport and more clearance to let you move from field to field safely.

Wing fold

The Kinze model 3205 (12R30) is a wing fold planter. Wing fold planters have hinges at their center, allowing each wing to fold forward for a transport width of 16′-2″.

Rigid

The Kinze model 3005 (4R30, 6R30, and 8R30) is an adaptable, small-frame, hitch pin planter. Its bolt-together design can easily switch from standard to split rows and can convert from 30″ to 15″ row spacing in minutes.

Hydraulics & hydraulic requirements

Several factors impact the tractor hydraulics required to properly operate Kinze planters; type of drive, meters, row hoppers, bulk fill seed, down force, and fertilizer delivery to name a few. For 3005 series planters, requirements range from 1 SCV/10 gpm (base machine with mechanical meters and dual valve conversion on row markers) to 5 SCV/35 gpm (base machine with vacuum meters, and row markers). The presence of a PTO Pump on 5000 series planters further impacts hydraulic requirements.
